This week we enjoyed learning about The Ethics of Veganism with Dr. Lisa Kemmerer

As a distinguished figure in the realms of anymal (ed: her word) ethics and social justice activism, Dr Kemmerer shares a journey marked by diverse experiences, academic accomplishments, and a steadfast commitment to hands-on advocacy. Her insights offer a deep understanding of the complex relationships interweaving anymal welfare, environmental concerns, and broader social justice issues.
Retiring from a 20-year teaching career in 2020, Dr. Kemmerer transitioned to full-time social justice activism with Tapestry, the vegan educational organization she founded. Her advocacy extends beyond anymal rights to encompass broader social justice issues, addressing the interconnected challenges facing humanity, anymals, and the environment.
As Dr. Kemmerer continues her work with Tapestry, her holistic approach to advocacy serves as an inspiration for those seeking meaningful change in the realms of ethics, compassion, and justice. Tapestry’s unique philosophy, commitment to knowledge accessibility, and collaborative efforts stand as pillars in building a more just and compassionate world.
As we were walking and learning together yesterday during our Wisdom Walk, I managed to take a few notes and I would like to share a few of the ideas which impacted me in some way. I am not quoting anyone, I am paraphrasing what I heard during the interview - filtered by my own mitote of ideas and thoughts, not to mention sometimes it is not easy to walk, listen, learn and take notes all at the same time! This is what I remember hearing and what I felt to be important to my reality.
I took plenty of notes and learned so much from Chef Bravo and Dr Sabatino about their own practices and how to overcome obstacles from living this lifestyle.
Please enjoy this great podcast from the NHA hosted by Dr Frank Sabatino when you have a chance, thank you.
As someone who came to this lifestyle of whole food plant-based eating for health and not ethical reasons, I was especially excited to learn more from Dr Lisa Kemmerer about the ethics of veganism. The ethical part took a few years to develop to be honest; it took time to learn about the realities of the animals and then even more time to reconcile the disparity in how I cuddle and love my precious cats and how I treated other animals on this planet. I know the ‘top of the food chain’ soundbite – but I am not biting.
Tapestry focuses on animal ethics and religions' connections to veganism
Social justice cannot be attained unless we integrate animals' rights
Experience and travel are great teachers and guides to the realities in the world
When we confine animals, we choose for them, which is not our right
We cannot know if 'helping' other sentient beings could actually be 'harming' them
All sentient beings must have autonomy to make decisions for their lives
Hope is the most important thing - without it we cannot move forward
We all have a place on this planet
We all have a gift to offer the planet
Whatever work we do, we do together - with hope and love
"God creates the world. God is Love"
"Compassion is at the core"
Thank you to Dr Lisa Kemmerer and Dr Sabatino for a wonderful interview together, for getting us moving whilst learning and for the joy and knowledge you both continue to share with us all - you have our gratitude.
