As a recognized authority on the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, Dr. Frank Sabatino has cared for and inspired thousands of people for over 40 years. Dr. Sabatino has a PhD in cell biology and neuroendocrinology and has done extensive landmark research on calorie restriction, stress, and aging. He currently is on staff at the TrueNorth Health Foundation in Santa Rosa, CA, and serves as the Director of Health Education at the NHA.

Dr. Neal Barnard is one of the most recognized experts in the field of food as medicine, who has made it his life’s work to raise awareness about lifestyle choices. During this episode of the NHA Health Science podcast, Dr. Frank Sabatino digs deep with Dr. Barnard into how lifestyle choices impact diabetes, heart disease, menopause, and other all-too-common health challenges, laying the foundation for a deeper exploration of Dr. Barnard’s invaluable contributions to this critical conversation.


Dr. Barnard’s research emphasizes the potential of lifestyle changes, particularly adopting a plant-exclusive diet, in managing and even reversing Type II diabetes. By eliminating animal products and minimizing oil consumption, his patients, as well as participants in various studies, experienced profound results, showcasing the remarkable influence of dietary choices on health outcomes.





 

As we were walking and learning together yesterday during our Wisdom Walk, I managed to take a few notes and I would like to share a few of the ideas which impacted me in some way. I am paraphrasing what I heard during the interview - filtered by my own mitote of ideas and thoughts.





I took plenty of notes and learned so much from Dr Barnard and Dr Sabatino about their own practices and how to overcome obstacles from living this lifestyle.




As always, it just pure pleasure to listen to Dr Barnard share both his personal story and his amazing knowledge. Here is just a bit of what I was able to take notes on whilst moving!


  • Dr Barnard is a musician - boy would I love to hear him and Dr Sabatino jam together someday! Dr Barnard's band is called Carbon Works

  • His 'aha' moment came during an autopsy and what plaque really looks like

  • His father was also specialized in diabetes in his medical practice

  • The goal then was to simply slow down the progression and the complications

  • In 2003 the NIH provided a grant to study the CAUSE of diabetes - fat, not sugar!

  • Exercise can help but nutrition is the true KEY to open the LOCK to our cells

  • Diabetes attacks ALL arteries throughout the body - even the brain

  • Diabetes impacts our immune and endocrine systems

  • This means more dis-ease and hormonal imbalances are linked to diabetes

  • Basics in nutrition - less fat, more fiber and whole plants

  • Soy beans are amazing and now I want to eat them every day!!!

  • They can help with menopausal symptoms - hot flashes, hormonal imbalances, etc

  • Anthocyathins are amazing antioxidants & have powerful metabolic benefits

  • "Insights from a PCRM study, published in JAMA Network Open, reveal that adopting a healthy plant-based diet can be cost-effective, leading to overall savings in food purchases by as much as 16%. Dr. Barnard underscores the importance of accessible and evidence-based resources in promoting widespread adoption of plant-based lifestyles."
