Get moving - Get healthy - Desk Treadmills

"All Truly Great Thoughts are Conceived While Walking." - Friedrich Nietzsche

In November of 2012 - yup, way back then! - Dr. Michael Greger shared an eye-opening video, Standing Up for Your Health, about the dangers of sitting for prolonged periods of time and how to get moving while working. His home-made desk treadmill station (held together with bungee cords in places!) inspired many to begin 'walking to work' and once at work - to keep on walking!!

This inspiration reached the media quickly, so quickly that by December, 2012, The New York Times published an article about the dangers of sitting for prolonged periods of time, recommending 'desk treadmills' as a possible solution. Ah, Dr. Greger ahead of the curve once more!

"By now we all have heard the research on how extended periods of sitting can be damaging to your health. Several publishing's and research have even gone as far as dubbing sitting as the new smoking. Stating that prolonged sitting leads to an increased risk for certain cancers, coronary heart disease, certain cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. The main contributing factor to our increased sedentary lifestyles is technology. Technology has brought about more inactive modes of transit, caused an increase in desk jobs and has developed more activities that can be done while sitting ... Knowing that a significant amount of our daily sedentary lives is spent sitting while working, incorporating a walking workstation into your office can be a great way to increase your daily fitness levels while simultaneously decreasing time spent sitting." - Lifespan.com

At 6D Living, the desk treadmill has been integrated with a VariDesk set-up (no bungee cords required!) to provide an active office space in which to work. It is an easy stroll, at a modest 2.5 - 3 mph, that at the end of a busy morning can yield up to 12 mile walk!

Some (just some!) of the documented benefits to using a desk treadmill whilst working include improved mood, reduction in stress levels, increased creativity and productivity levels, decrease in blood pressure as well helping to manage type-2 diabetes! Time to get walking and get healthy at work!

The most amazing part of a desk treadmill is that exercise just seems to happen - no need to make time to fit it in, exercise is now part of the daily routine of office work. There are other ways to exercise at your desk - there are now desk elliptical machines, step machines and even row machines! So get those endorphins releasing, get to work and get healthy!

On 16 February, 2024 Dr Michael Greger joined our 6D Community for a wonderful discussion. We discussed his book How Not To Age and a bit more! We are grateful for his generosity and wisdom and we hope you will enjoy the interview.
