What we learned this week from Dr Bulsiewicz during our Wisdom Walk

This week we enjoyed watching

NHA Podcast - Hosted by Dr Frank Sabatino

Wisdom Walks are facilitated by Sia Hurst

Dr. Frank Sabatino delivers an engaging conversation for the Health Science Podcast. In this episode, he invites Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, an award-winning gastroenterologist, internationally recognized gut health expert. He is the founder of ThePlantFedGut website and the author of Fiber Fueled and The Fiber Fueled Cookbook. Dr Bulsiewicz is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Emory School of Medicine.

We are grateful to the NHA for allowing us to use their podcasts exclusively for all of our Wisdom Walks.

Dr Bulsiewicz shares his poignant and transformative story with honesty and clarity. He was not living a healthy life - at all. Raised on a typical SAD diet he struggled through medical school, feeling miserable, tired and overwhelmed with the intense demands of the curriculum. He said he had a gut in his thirties and this led him to focus on exercise in order to improve his health, he made no changes to his nutrition. This approach did not work and his frustration grew as he could not heal himself – even though he was a doctor!

Fortunately, life (and health) favor the bold and the determined and one fortuitous evening his entire world changed. He went on a date. He ordered a pork chop. She ordered a variety of vegetable side dishes. She was beautiful, healthy, intelligent, vibrant and she shared why she only ate plants. And he wondered ‘what if the food that I was raised on and enjoy is in fact the problem?’. LIGHT BULB OF LOVE AND HEALTH!!

Dr B shares his experience with transitioning to this lifestyle and how his experienced the benefits of his new choices, he then started digging into the science of it all. What he shares about the realities of the disease care system we currently have, its educational training focus and how we can transform it for healthcare and not disease care is enlightening and encouraging. He assures us that when we all work together and share the knowledge and experience the reality – the system itself will change. First thing though – experience. Had he not experienced the benefits he may not have come to the moment of intellectual curiosity which led him to become the doctor we all know and love now.

For Dr B, his process was results from experiencing the food - then questions about why - then research for the answers! And the world is now a healthier place - we are so happy he went on that date!!!

“YOU CANNOT PROVE IT ANY MORE THAN WHEN IT HAPPENS TO YOURSELF!”

As we were walking and learning together yesterday during our Wisdom Walk, I managed to take a few notes and I would like to share a few of the ideas which impacted me in some way. I am not quoting anyone, I am paraphrasing what I heard during the interview - filtered by my own mitote of ideas and thoughts, not to mention sometimes it is not easy to walk, listen, learn and take notes all at the same time! This is what I remember hearing and what I felt to be important to my reality.

Their discussion regarding the changes needed in our current system was not shy! Indeed, the systemic change required to convert our disease care system into a health care system will require us all to get involved. Beginning with the educational system itself redefining its goal from care to prevention, including nutritional studies for all doctors and encouraging young doctors who are already more inclined to encourage this way of living than ever before. Systemic change can occurs when we reward all health care providers for keeping their patients out of the hospitals and off of medications. I did appreciate that Dr B emphasized that big pharma is not ‘evil’ – it is a business – a for profit business – it is not focused on healing, that would not be profitable.

“YOU CANNOT PROVE IT ANY MORE THAN WHEN IT HAPPENS TO YOURSELF!”

Much was shared about our microbiome of course and the importance of diversity in our diets. Diversity of plants! And wow did they dig deep into the structure, metabolic function and physiology of it all as well. From butyrate to SCFA to pre/pro/post biotics, they covered it all – and in great detail with clarity and precision. Understanding that our digestive system’s health determines the health of other bodily systems and functions – immune system, endocrine system, cognition, moods and even the expression of our genetic code was a mind-blowing (gut-blowing?!?) moment for me. All in all, the brain in our gut is pretty smart!

OH, and they did mention that more people in this world are fiber deficient than protein deficient. And yet, people still focus on protein, forgetting its toxicity at high levels – no matter the source or type. Fiber? All types are good and we need more of it!! It is not toxic at high levels – though proper hydration is crucial for the ‘passing’ of the fiber!

“YOU CANNOT PROVE IT ANY MORE THAN WHEN IT HAPPENS TO YOURSELF!”

I took pages plenty of notes and Dr B shared some pretty detailed information. I have shared just a few ideas which seem to have remained with me - in a good way! Please watch this great podcast from the NHA hosted by Dr Frank Sabatino when you have a chance, thank you.

  • FIBER! FIBER! FIBER!

  • WHOLE GRAINS WITH LEGUMES AND GREENS ARE SUPER FOODS

  • THERE IS AN ‘ORGAN’ IN THE COLON WHICH CONTAINS 38 TRILLION MICROBES

  • THOSE MICROBES NEED TO BE FED – THEY CAN GET ‘HANGRY’

  • SOLUBLE FIBER REACHES THE COLON AND FEEDS THESE MICROBES

  • SOLUBLE FIBER IS A PREBIOTIC

  • MICROBES EAT THE PREBIOTIC AND PRODUCE MANY HEALTHY THINGS!

  • THEY PRODUCE THINGS LIKE BUTYRATE – SCFA’s – ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MOLECULES

  • BUTYRATE PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN MAINTAINING THE COLON BARRIER

  • OUR GUT BARRIER IS DYNAMIC – REQUIRING REPAIR AND MAINTAINANCE

  • WHAT WE EAT DETERMINES THE HEALTH OF OUR MICROBIOME

  • THERE ARE OVER 38 TRILLION LITTLE CRITTERS LIVING INSIDE OUR GUT

  • THESE CRITTERS ARE HUNGRY AND LOVE FIBER – WE MUST FEED THEM!

  • THESE CRITTERS SHOW THEIR GRATITUDE BY KEEPING US HEALTHY

  • YOU CANNOT PROVE IT ANY MORE THAN WHEN IT HAPPENS TO YOURSELF!

And if you need a reminder about your FGOALS, they discuss those categories and share which plants fit into each group. Take notes when you watch the video - FGOALS are an amazing guide for optimal nutrition.

Thank you Dr Bulsiewicz and Dr Sabatino for a wonderful interview together, for getting us moving whilst learning and for the joy and knowledge you both continue to share with us all - you have our gratitude.
