Harvesting Simplicity - Your Home Is Not a Storage Unit

Melissa Cotton is the creator of this series of posts, published monthly, entitled Harvesting Simplicity. She covers a variety of topics presented by Joshua Becker and others to help guide us all to live a more 'stuff-free' lifestyle. Just because it is free, does not mean we need to take and give it space in our lives.

Somewhere along the way, many of us quietly began treating our homes like storage units—places to hold onto things for “someday.” Closets fill with clothes that no longer fit or reflect who we are. Kitchen cabinets hide gadgets we forgot we owned. Garages become crowded resting places for hobbies we once loved but no longer pursue. Without realizing it, we allow excess to take over the very spaces meant to support our lives.

Your home is not a storage unit—it’s a living, breathing space meant to support and reflect your life. It should work for you, not against you, offering comfort, clarity, and ease in your daily routines. When your environment is aligned with your needs, it becomes a place where you can truly rest, focus, and feel at home.

When our spaces are filled with unnecessary belongings, the cost goes far beyond physical clutter. Even when we think we’ve tuned it out, clutter competes for our attention. A stack of unopened mail, an overstuffed drawer, or a crowded shelf quietly signals unfinished decisions. This creates a subtle but constant mental strain. It becomes harder to focus, to relax, and to feel truly at ease in your own home.

Decluttering, then, isn’t about perfection. It’s not about creating an Instagram-worthy aesthetic or stripping your life down to the bare minimum. It’s about intention. It’s about making space for what actually matters—whether that’s clarity, calm, meaningful relationships, or simply the small daily peace of knowing where all of your things are.

A powerful shift happens when you stop asking, “Where can I store this?” and start asking, “Is this adding value to my life or simply taking up space?” Storage is often a temporary fix for delayed decisions. It gives the illusion of organization while quietly allowing clutter to grow. Instead, every item in your home should serve a clear purpose, support the way you live, or add meaningful value to your everyday life.

When you begin to see your home this way, everything changes. You move from managing excess to curating your environment. And in doing so, you create a space that feels lighter, calmer, and more aligned with the life you actually want to live!
