6D Blog Series for our year-long PLANT GAME!
Jennifer Armstrong is the creator of this series of posts, published bi-monthly, entitled 365 in 365. These posts will help guide us all as we accept this opportunity to diversify our plants in order to nurture and nourish our microbiome and thus improve our health and wellness.
Jennifer's new blog series focuses on how we can all diversify our plant nutrition and how that can impact not only our own lives, but the lives of our loved ones, our friends, our communities and our planet - not to mention the animals!

365 IN 365 - A Day of Tea
True tea is a shrub with glossy green leaves (Camellia sinensis), and only the new tips are harvested for tea - which means these tea bushes are constantly being pruned. Some of it is done by hand, some done by skimming a sort of vacuum clipper along the tops, supported on either side by a tea harvester.Â

365 IN 365 - Rare Treat
The fruit is sweet, similar in texture to a mango, reminiscent in flavor of a banana or other tropical fruits. The fruits are vaguely bean-shaped, ranging in size from crab apple to pear to mango. They look like stubby green bananas, and a bowl of pawpaws will perfume your kitchen with a sweet, floral fragrance. It seems like they should have a broad audience.

365 IN 365 - Will it Air Fry?!
Following my own advice to seek out grocery stores that I don’t habitually shop at, I went to one of the BIG supermarkets in town and went very slowly up and down the aisles, looking for new options. My glance landed on canned hominy, and without a clue what to do with it, I chucked it in the cart.

365 IN 365 - Diversity: Seasonal or Stored?
There is an estimated 20,000 - 30,000 species of edible plants in the world, so regardless of what form you find them in - fresh, canned, frozen, pickled, dried, fermented - give them a taste. You might find a new favorite.

365 IN 365 - All Hail the Spud!
And happily, for the purposes of getting plenty of plant diversity, there are multiple varieties of potato - blue ones, purple ones, white ones, yellow one, red ones - little, big, skinny, roly-poly. They say you can’t go home again, but I’ve gone home to potatoes. All hail the mighty spud!

365 IN 365 - The Other Seafood
There are as many as 145 varieties of edible seaweeds eaten around the world. 145! That’s nearly halfway to our goal of 365! Although it’s unlikely any of us are going to find access to 145 different species of seaweeds, it’s not too hard to get your hands on half a dozen or so very common varieties in their dried form.

365 IN 365 - What I’ve Added Lately, and Eating a Brand New Food
Going to the grocery store has become something of a scavenger hunt. Every time I reach for something I usually buy, I stop myself and look around to see if there’s something I can switch it out for. This week at the store I grabbed broccolini instead of broccoli, radicchio instead of red cabbage, and water chestnut instead of jicama.Â

365 IN 365 - Tracking Fruits or Vegetables? The Court Has Something To Say.
For gardeners - not all gardeners, but some gardeners, like the ones who like to use botanical names or follow specific pruning schedules - clear definitions are important. You might ask what is the different between a fruit and a vegetable and you’ll get a long and possibly pedantic answer from this kind of gardener. Okay, I’m really talking about myself.

365 IN 365 - What I Added To My List This Week: Samphire!
Have you ever stopped in your tracks while shopping for produce? That just happened to me this week at the Farmer’s Market. A dude in a bandana with a table full of beautiful mushrooms also had pint berry baskets full of green - twigs? Stems?

365 IN 365 - Informational Video about our new game, how to play and how to count your plants!!
Jennifer, Sia and some member of our community came together on zoom to discuss the details of our new FREE international event which is a great way to diversify your microbiome.

365 IN 365 - It’s The Little Things
They say a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step - and then those small steps add up to something mighty. So, it is with adding diversity to your plant-based diet, and the journey to 365 can begin with some very, very small things: seeds, spices, and nuts.

365 IN 365 - What I Added To My List This Week: Dandelion Greens!
This week at my local Farmer’s Market I found bright green bunches of dandelion leaves - something I’ve also noticed sometimes at the grocery store. These were deliberately grown by the farmer, not plucked out of the lawn, by the way!

365 IN 365 - Welcome to My Ingredients-Only Household
Aside from fresh fruit and vegetables, just about everything a plant-based cook needs can happily sit on a pantry shelf, and if, like me, you dislike running to the store for one thing called for by a recipe, you can have literally everything a plant-based cook needs in the pantry, or the freezer, or the fridge!
