“Not sure you want to get rid of something, try living without it for a while and then decide whether it’s necessary to you or superfluous.” Joshua Becker (1)

Minimalism isn't about owning less just for the sake of it—it's about making space for what truly matters in your life. Whether you're new to decluttering or well into your minimalist journey, pausing to ask the right questions before letting go can help you make intentional, lasting changes.

3 Simple Questions to Ask Before Decluttering
1. Do I use this regularly—or am I just keeping it “just in case”?

We often keep things just in case we might need them someday, but that day rarely comes. Holding on to these items adds unnecessary clutter and anxiety, while letting go of them creates space and freedom. Trust that if a true need arises in the future, you'll find a way to meet it without stockpiling out of fear. (2)
2. Does this help me live the life I want to live?

This gets to the heart of Joshua Becker’s minimalist philosophy. Every item in your home should support your goals, values, and desired lifestyle. If it distracts from or adds weight to your life rather than supporting it, it’s a good idea to let go. (1)

3. Would I buy this again today?

Imagine, if the item were sitting in a store today with its current price tag, would you still want it? If you wouldn’t spend money on the item today knowing what you know now, it may no longer have a place in your life. It is probably time to let it go. (2)
Decluttering isn’t just about tidying up—it’s about reclaiming your space, your energy, and your focus. With every drawer you organize and every item you let go of, you're creating more space not just in your home, but in your mind. Start small, be honest with yourself, and let each item you declutter make room for a more intentional life. You can do this!
