Super Immunity by Joel Fuhrman, M.D.
Below you will find quotes from our reading this week as well as a few exploratory questions which we can use as a guide for our discussion on Sunday. Share your own thoughts about these quotes below and please post any thoughts or idea or quotes from the reading which you would like to discuss in this thread as well, thank you.
“… exposure to medical care and resources spent on health care are linked to decreases in healthy life expectancy, not increases.”
(citation Baicker K, Chandra A. Health affairs (2004): Overdosed America: The Broken Promise of American Medicine. Harper Collins, 2004.)
“Because the drugs prescribed by doctors encourage patients’ risky lifestyle behaviors and self-destructive eating choices to continue; they give patients ‘permission’ to continue poor behaviors because they mask the symptoms of disease.”
“A true health care system focused on maximizing patients’ well-being would center around removing impediments to better health, promotion of healthy habits (such as smoking cessation, exercise, and dietary improvement), and protection against exposure to chemicals, toxins, and other known causes of disease. Instead, prescription drugs, which all have toxicities and dangers, have become the primary intervention for every dietary-induced health issue.”
“If you don’t address the primary cause – a disease-causing diet – just adding more and more medications is futile.”
“Medicines cannot drug away the cellular defects that develop in response to improper nutrition throughout life.”
Dr. Fuhrman’s comparison of fighting disease with drugs instead of nutrition as the equivalent of fixing the oil alarm in a car by cutting the wire to the alarm warning light was spot on! No matter how many drugs we ingest, the underlying cause of our dis-ease is not addressed and we continue to live in a state of ill-health. We become the functioning sick – that is, until we cease to function as the dis-ease, not cured by medicine, eventually consumes our last moment of health and life.
How can we reconcile this truth with what is happening in our societies? Our families? Our own homes? How can each one of us endeavor to share the truth about nutrition and health in order to save our loved ones (and perhaps even ourselves) from a slow and unnecessary demise? Moreover, how can we talk with our medical professionals to share what we know about optimal nutrition?
“When we eat a nutrient-scarce diet, diseases flourish. With nutritional excellence, our body becomes a miraculous, disease-resistant organism. The flu is no exception.”
“If we are going to advise giving a flu shot to everybody from infancy on, every single year, the long-term effects must be more closely examined.”
“We should all be appropriately fearful of the flu. Maybe that fear would encourage us to take action and start eating large amounts of nutrient-rich natural foods.”
Dr. Fuhrman tells us to be calm, not lose our cool and to not swallow the hype pill being served up by the media. Though written before Covid-19, his suggestions for good hygiene, social distancing when ill and not touching things (your face!) are relevant to us all today. These simple actions, combined with a strong immune system are all we currently have to fight this virus. Could it be that only the WFPB human will survive pandemics in large numbers? What about the vaccine – how confident are each of one of us about its efficacy? Finally, what do you do when you do fall ill with the flu?

“Only serious effort begets real and positive change, however. The same is true with anything in life.”
Let’s all commit to a serious effort during this next week to continue strengthening our immune systems and building optimal health for ourselves and our loved ones. What serious effort will you make this week to move closer to achieving Super Immunity? What will you do this week to help those about whom you care to boost their immune systems?
Please share your thoughts/comments about the quotes or the questions or any other thoughts about the reading this week. I look forward to our discussion on Sunday.
